How Sessions work - what to expect in a typical session

Family/Child session

Sessions are warm, practical and built around your child’s everyday life. A typical session lasts around one hour to one and a half hours, depending on your child’s needs and the type of support agreed.

What a Typical Session May Include

  • A short conversation about your priorities, questions and goals

  • A listening/technology check

  • Play-based routines that support listening, speaking, communication and language

  • Book sharing as part of the session

  • Coaching and modelling strategies for caregivers

  • Identifications of areas of strength and needs and the next steps needed

  • Clear take-home messages to practise during everyday routines and daily life

For example, we might look at how to make hearing technology part of the morning routine, how to encourage listening during play, how to use books and songs to build language, or how to support your child in noisy everyday environments. We use assessments to set a baseline of communication and language development and set targets to enhance development. Each session is tailored around specific listening and spoken language targets to ensure your child is developing age appropriate skills

Where Sessions Take Place

Support can take place in your home, remotely using an online platform, or in another agreed setting. Some families prefer in-person visits, while others find remote support works very well, especially when sessions are focused on parent coaching and everyday routines.

After the Session

After each session, you will have clear next steps and practical ideas to use at home or in your setting. Where appropriate, written notes, recommendations or resources can be provided.

Nursery/Educational Session

When a deaf child attends a nursery, preschool or early years setting, staff can play a vital role in supporting communication, inclusion, confidence and access to learning. I work with settings to make support practical, realistic and easy to embed across the day.

Consultancy may include staff training, observation, environmental advice, guidance around hearing technology in the setting, strategies for supporting listening and spoken language, and written recommendations that can be shared with the team.

Support Can Help Settings To

  • Understand the child’s hearing loss and what it may mean day to day

  • Support use and management of hearing technology

  • Create a listening-friendly environment

  • Modify learning activities to increase accessibility for all and improve learning outcomes

  • Use language-rich routines, play and books

  • Build staff confidence

  • Work collaboratively with families and other professionals

International/Expat session

Families living outside the UK may face additional challenges, especially in areas where specialist listening and spoken language support is limited. We offer remote and flexible support for international and expat families who want consistent, family-centred guidance.

Support can be adapted around time zones, local services, cultural considerations and the professionals already involved in your child’s care. Where helpful, we can review reports, help you prepare for appointments, and support you in making informed decisions about next steps.
